Beer of the Week 12/6: Say Goodnight, Kevin
Beer: Say Goodnight, Kevin
Type: Imperial Stout
Brewer: Lost Shoe Brewing and Roasting Company
Location: Marlborough, MA
Winter has historically been my personal least favorite beer season. Dark, thick beers that often don’t taste a damn thing like beer and serve better as a dessert than a beverage.
This was my line of thinking prior to BeerSighted, but it is now my duty to expand my horizons. Lost Shoe may have expedited my journey to enjoying the dark, thick stouts of the world.
Lost Shoe invited us to join them for the unveiling of their new winter wonderland set up called “The Lost Forest” along with two new beer releases. We have a blog coming later in the week to discuss that outing in more depth, but for now we focus on one of the two new brews called Say Goodnight, Kevin.
The details on this big guy: it’s an Imperial Stout brewed with graham cracker, marshmallow, cacao nibs, Madagascar vanilla beans and milk sugar. To top it off, they served it to us in a chocolate syrup, graham cracker crumble rimmed glass with a flame roasted marshmallow on top. And then to REALLY top it off, it’s 13.8% ABV! Woooof!
The high ABV was crucial for me. No, not because I’m reckless, but because it gave this beer the alcoholic edge it needed to truly make it feel like a beer of some kind rather than a snack. Sips are as creamy as you’d expect with the ingredients listed above. Smooth and almost fluffy throughout, it tasted a whole lot like a milkshake with increasing maltiness towards the back end. The finish and aftertaste had that sharpness that comes with such a high ABV, and that was precisely how I was hoping it’d go.
Don’t let this gentle giant scare you off. There’s a lot going on in this one, but it all flows together well. Lost Shoe may very well have made a stout fan out of me!
