Beer of the Week 9/20: Good Gourd

Updated: Oct 5, 2020

Beer: Good Gourd

Type: Imperial Pumpkin Ale

ABV: 8.8%

Brewer: Cigar City Brewing

Location: Tampa, FL

It’s mid September, which means pumpkin and fall beers are out in full force. There’s a lot of division in the craft brewing world about whether that’s a good thing, but we can’t deny the popularity when those beers hit the shelves and the tap lines in bars. We here at BeerSighted are all about the fall beers, so expect a few to be featured as our Beer of the Week in the near future!

We’re starting with a classic: Cigar City’s Good Gourd Imperial Pumpkin Ale. It’s not for the faint of heart at 8.8%, but that’s not overly evident as it makes its way through your palate. It’s brewed with all the classic fall fixings, including cinnamon, allspice, cloves, nutmeg and vanilla, the latter of which is evident in the aftertaste and gives this brew a clean, sweet finish. It does have a tiny bit of a bite, which you can chalk up to a combo of the lofty alcohol percentage and some hop bitterness. And of course, the pumpkin is tasting forward as well. Cigar City is distributed far and wide, so get your hands on this fall beer while it’s around!
