Beer of the Week 12/20: Old Soul

Beer: Old Soul

Type: New England IPA

ABV: 6.8%

Brewer: Old Planters Brewing Company and Wandering Soul Beer Company

Location: Beverly, MA

There are a couple of things that immediately stand out about this beer we especially like. First, we love a good collaboration. It’s even better when the two entities collaborating are local, and we’ve had the pleasure of getting to try a range of existing brews from each. Second, we get to nerd out about a new hop we’ve never tried before! Since both of these things are true about Old Soul New England IPA, it’s almost like this beer started a 100-yard dash with a 40-yard head start.

Old Planters and Wandering Soul are two well-established brewers on Massachusetts’ North Shore, and their coming together on this IPA immediately drew our attention since we’ve sampled plenty of each of their offerings in the past. Both brewers make outstanding NEIPAs separately as well, so it seemed like a match made in Heaven. Then we got more info about the Nectaron hop which was exclusively used to make this beer. There are no other hops involved. And at the end of the day, that’s a bold move worth celebrating.

This thing is LOADED with aromas and flavors of tropical citrus with a small dash of dankness you’d expect in an IPA. Nectaron is defined by fruit-forward characteristics including notes of pineapple, grapefruit and passionfruit. It’s smooth, it’s soft and it’s bursting with flavor. It’s got a solid ABV, but not too overpowering to steer you away from having another. I personally have not had another beer that is made with Nectaron hops (from New Zealand), but I will be on the lookout for more after this one. Although this collaboration beer may be in short circulation for now (not to mention it’s selling like hot cakes), we’re confident the demand will weigh heavy on Old Planters and Wandering Soul to roll this out again, at least in some capacity.
